Mournful and longing. I agree. Yet you're not trying to get away from them. What you're saying really strikes a chord with me. Like a movie that's sad, but you don't want it to end.

It's one of my favorite sounds, along with crows cawing and rain on the roof. Now that I'm thinking about it, the crows and the train both bring up the same feeling in me. Kind of mournful, kind of a longing sound. To me, it's the sound of the suchness of life.

There's something about a train whistle that calms me down. I wonder, though, if other people get a different feeling from it. I agree...britches is an underused word.
